ABOUT CAMP BLUELAB
To kick off our 7th season, CO/LAB is partnering with nonprofit sensory-based theater group Bluelaces Theater Company to create a new program called Camp BlueLAB. Bluelaces creates highly interactive, sensory-based theatrical experiences for people of all ages living with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental differences. Like CO/LAB, Bluelaces believes that all individuals, regardless of ability status, should have the opportunity to experience the magic of theater in a lively and welcoming environment.
Camp BlueLAB will bring summer theater fun to kids ages 10-13. This week long experience will give campers an opportunity to explore fundamentals of theater through the themes of Bluelaces show All Aboard!. The camp will culminate in an interactive final sharing of All Aboard! This new summer experience will connect our veteran CO/LAB actors with young campers as counselors of Camp BlueLAB. This Leadership Initiative allows our CO/LAB:core actors to be artistic mentors, modeling positive leadership for younger participants involved with Camp BlueLAB. This is a very exciting evolution of our CO/LAB:connect programming that provides a new creative opportunity for some actors who have been working with CO/LAB for a few seasons.
This year the program will take place Monday July 31st-August 4th 2017 from 9am-12pm at TheaterLab (357 West 36h Street, 3rd floor). The program is free, but we require an $50 deposit to register. Campers must be available for all program dates in order to register.
If you are interested in enrolling someone as a camper please click the button below. We will get back to you with further information to confirm your registration (or spot on the waitlist) and process your deposit. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. WHO CAN REGISTER?
Camp BlueLAB is open to any camper 10-13 who identifies with having a developmental disability. The program is a drop off program as the room is supported by multiple BlueLAB staff and counselors. However, there are several needs that our staff does not yet have the bandwith to support. Specific needs, in which BlueLAB cannot independently support include:
- Bathroom support
- Medical support (i.e. if a participant has seizures)
- Behavioral support (i.e. if a participant has any behaviors which may compromise the safety of the room)
- Language support (i.e. if a participant needs a translator)
In these instances, CO/LAB and Bluelaces will work with the campers caregiver to come up with a plan to integrate them into the program with additional support. This usually results in the caregiver providing a one on one in the classroom who attends class with the camper and/or remains nearby.
