SUPPORTING ARTIST FAQs

  • A Supporting Artist (SA) is an individual providing assistance in the CO/LAB classroom. They are there to be part of the ensemble and participate in the class just as the actors do, but they also are there to make sure the actors get the support needed to participate in class.

  • We are looking for enthusiastic, kind individuals with an interest in theater. A Supporting Artist does not need any formal acting or education training. We need reliable folks who are responsive to emails and have availability in their schedules. The ideal SA has great communication skills, works well in a group, and isn’t afraid to be a little silly sometimes. All SAs must be 18+. If you are interested in being a part of CO/LAB but aren’t yet 18, please inquire about other volunteer opportunities.

  • Supporting Artists are asked to model activities for the class, collaborate with actors for games and exercises, and participate alongside the ensemble for devising and scene work. Our classes also rely on Supporting Artists to help make sure things go smoothly; you may be asked to help with setting up the space, technology needs, and classroom materials.

  • We have two different SA tracks at CO/LAB, in order to accommodate the needs of our volunteers’ ever-changing NYC schedules.

Rotating Supporting Artists (RSA): This gives you a chance to get to know CO/LAB’s programs and for CO/LAB to get to know you! As an RSA, you are required to participate in at least 4 sessions which will be scheduled on a rolling basis and according to your schedule preferences. This track is open to new and returning SAs.

Consistent Supporting Artist (CSA): This track places you in a core class or residency to volunteer in the same class every week for the duration of a 10-15 week semester. For some classes, this also includes performing in a final sharing or show alongside the actors! This track is open to returning SAs only.

  • The SA program is volunteer-based.
