About CO/LAB & being a Supporting Artist

CO/LAB Theater Group is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing Creative Opportunities without Limits And Boundaries. CO/LAB exists to offer individuals with developmental disabilities a creative and social outlet through theater arts. We have three types of programming:

  • CO/LAB:core, where we host programming for individuals with developmental disabilities!

  • CO/LAB:connect, where we partner with organizations all over the city!

  • CO/LAB:leaders, where seasoned CO/LAB actors are leaders in the classroom, office, and community.

Supporting Artists will most frequently be involved in CO/LAB:core. If you’d like more information, you can read more about the position below and access some SA FAQs.

Before beginning work, all Supporting Artists must pass a NY State Background check, complete a Sexual Harassment Prevention Training Course and a suite of volunteer paperwork.

There are two kinds of Supporting Artists:

Rotating Supporting Artists (RSAs) and Consistent Supporting Artists (CSAs).

Rotating Supporting Artists rotate throughout different classes at CO/LAB and are required to complete 4 shifts over the course of the semester.

Consistent Supporting Artists are SAs that have volunteered with CO/LAB for at least one semester and attend the same class each week with a maximum of three absences per semester.

New Supporting Artists are required to attend a MANDATORY orientation and training.

You will be asked to indicate which date you can attend on your application:

  • Orientation #1: Wednesday, January 31 from 6-9pm at ART/NY Brooklyn (138 S. Oxford St, Brooklyn)

  • Orientation #2: Saturday, February 3 from 2-5pm at ART/NY Manhattan (520 8th Ave, NY)

This semester, CO/LAB is offering seven weekly classes for individuals with developmental disabilities! We will also offer additional classes, including single workshops and residencies with partner programs, on a rolling basis. The semester begins the week of February 21 for most classes. Act One and Two classes will be featured in showcases in mid-June.
